The top of this guitar was made in the workshop of Masaru Kohno in a time when his guitars were not yet mass-produced. The guitar was made in the highly regarded Takamine work shop with the excellent craftsmanship and material. (It was said that Mr. Kohno had a hand in the setup of this workshop). This particular guitar is one of the best I’ve had from the Kohno + Takamine shop. Kohno's guitars truly are among the best guitars made in the 1970s in Japan and in the world for that matter. This one is no exception. Even though only the top of this guitar was made in the Kohno shop, its sound proves once again that the top is the most important part for the sound of a guitar.
The guitar is in excellent condition and has one notable ding on the top and some minor scratches on the back of the neck. Apart from that, it’s in great condition. It has no cracks or other defects that affect the sound or playability. The neck is straight and there is more than enough room left on the saddle to lower the action if needed, even though the current set up is already pretty low. The original frets are in excellent condition with no noticeable wears. The playability is very good with no buzzes or wolf notes anywhere, which is typical of Kohno guitars. The action setup makes for a comfortable adjustment of under 4 mm on the bass side and under 3 mm on the treble side at the 12-th fret.
The guitar is a typical Kohno and produces sound at a high volume with very good sustain. The cedar top helps bring a bit more sweetness in the sound and makes the guitar feel more relaxed and more Spanish sounding than the spruce top guitars from the same shop. The sound is very well balanced string to string and all the way down the neck. The (almost) new strings on the guitar are D’Addario EJ-45 Nylon normal tension strings.
If you are looking for a Kohno guitar from this time period, this one can be had for a fraction of the price of one that is completely made in the Kohno shop.
The guitar will be shipped in a old used case, only for shipping purpose, and will be well packed with strings loosened.
