I’ve decided to sell on my Bert Kwakkel Merula guitar.
This is a serious concert guitar – Mr. Kwakkel has made over 500 guitars, many of which are in the hands of top-flight professionals, including Matthew McAllister (who titled one of his albums “Merula” after his Kwakkel), Ian Watt, and Amanda Cook (loads more on the Kwakkel website). Indeed, it was hearing the fabulous tone of Ms. Cook’s guitar on her incredible “Selected guitar works of William Lovelady” CD that led me to search out a Kwakkel. She recorded that on an Indian guitar; this is Brazilian. I am the second owner, and imported this from Europe. There are loads of YouTube clips of Kwakkels if you need to hear some. It’s a strong, projecting tone, beautifully clear and separated, and with lots of sustain, suitable for a professional or amateur who’s serious about their guitar playing.
Specs are as follows: Cedar top, genuine Brazilian back and sides. Scale length 640mm. Nut width 50mm. Standard neck profile. Comes with a Hiscox case. Also has two saddle for low and medium action. It’s so easy to play, I’ve never bothered with the “low” saddle.
It’s in good condition for a used guitar. No cracks or anything structural. Being cedar, there are a few dings on the top, which I’ve tried to show on the pics.
Here are a couple of links to recordings of this guitar. The first is my cackhanded rendition of Cook’s superb “Curlew” and the second is Andrew York’s “Avenue of the Giants”. Nothing fancy – just an iPad and an Apogee Mic recorded quite close to the guitar, but should give you enough info to know that this is a serious instrument:
New, this would cost 6500 euros from Mr. Kwakkel, with VAT taking it to 7,800 euros (approx. £ 6035 GBP). I’m looking for just £3,495 for a Brazilian, top-flight guitar.
Given it’s Brazilian, I’m not keen to export this out of the UK. I will do so if pushed, but only if you accept the chance (albeit small) that it may get seized – I took that chance myself when getting it into the UK, which happened without a hitch. I could probably deliver in mainland England to avoid shipping it. Please PM me if serious and interested in trying it. I can show it in either St. Albans or London, UK.
