GB £..795 R.E. Spain spruce 1985, Plymouth

Postby Blondie » Tue Nov 08, 2016 7:14 pm

Type: classical, Ray Spain
Year: 1985
Scale length: 650mm
Top: Spruce
Back/sides: Indian Rosewood
Fingerboard: ebony
Condition: excellent
Price: £795
Viewing most welcome in Plymouth or Exeter, UK
Comes with a hard case.

String spacing at nut is 44mm and bridge is 57mm. Action at 12th fret/6th string is a very comfortable 3.7mm (I prefer my action height at the lower end). It has a bone saddle and De Jung friction free tuners which are the smoothest tuners I have ever used. To the best of my knowledge it's a French polish finish and back and sides could actually be Brazilian rosewood, but assume it is Indian rosewood as I cannot be certain. I'd welcome any informed opinion on this.

The guitar is well balanced across the strings, has a sweet tone and good volume. I can't imagine finding a better guitar at this kind of price range, usually second hand luthier guitars are into 4 figures. Indeed, search 'Ivor Mairants R E Spain' and 'Goodwins guitars R E Spain' and you'll see similar guitars.

The condition for its age is remarkable, no cracks/repairs and I can't point to any scratches, dings or marks, simply light handling wear. I own several other much younger guitars that have not fared so well.

About Ray (R.E.) Spain
Ray Spain built around 300 guitars in the 70s and 80s, many of which were sold through Ivor Mairants in London where he worked as a luthier, they were also sold via the classical guitar shops at Bristol and Nottingham. Further info here:

Shipping within UK will be about £25, international will depend on where you are. Happy to answer any questions.

I'm interested. I'm wondering what questions to ask to help me judge whether I'll like it. I don't perform but do record so tonal balance and an even resonance are important, but I expect you'll tell me they're fine. Seems to me I should just buy it but give me a moment to think about it.

That's an odd arrangement at the bridge. Are these strings with ball-ends?

Diamond Bridge Beads. I also use them and like them a lot. It's a great addition to a 6 hole tie block guitar IMHO.

Yep Adam's right. The guy that markets these is a regular on Delcamp. I like them too :-)

Current strings are Savarez Cantigas, I can of course take them off and string the guitar conventionally - and actually I probably should before selling as I'd quite like to keep the beads!

Lots of discussion here on bone beads/bridge beads, effect on break angle etc.

They're fine :D

Seriously though, I try to avoid going overboard with descriptions and avoid the 'hard sell'. The third string doesn't go 'thunk', the bass doesn't overpower everything, upper notes on top string are not 'weedy', it does not sound muddy and lack clarity - these are perhaps some of the common issues with cheaper guitars, mainly at the lower end of things.

I would much prefer it if you tried it out (whereabouts are you?). Its tempting to put up a video but my new garden studio is fairly small and I have a bass resonance in there that that I need to address. The guitar would sound rather boomy, which it is not.

Happy to answer any questions. I have tried to price it fairly, it is not quite up there with some contemporary luthier guitars I have played (I sold a Frith to a member here two years ago, I think he's still around), but at this price point I can't see much competition unless you can fund a really nice mid level factory model (say something that goes for £1300/$£1400 new) secondhand.

Okay Blondie. I'm sold. How do we go about making the deal?

I'm in West Yorkshire so trying it out doesn't seem like an option.

Wait a moment. I should be knocking you down...

You're not really Blondie are you? If you are I'll catch the next train down.

For some reason my last two PMs to you are showing in my outbox and not sent messages, so I don't know whether you have received them.
Please PM me your email address, thanks.
