Bone Nut (52mm) and Bone Saddle
660mm Scale Length
Here is a chance to own one of the most collectible classical guitars made in Japan in the 1970s by one of the greatest Japanese luthiers Kazuo Yairi. Add to that the fact that this guitar sounds as good as or better than any Ramirez 1A from the same period have had a chance to play and you have a great bargain too. Guitars with this kind of wood selection are either not made any more or cost many thousands of dollars if made in recent years. This particular model has been discontinued for many years now. The Kazuo Yairi CY series guitars from the 1970s and 1980s are of much better quality in both sound and build than later models from the 1990s and 2000s.
The finish of the guitar is in great condition with only a few marks on it – namely two dings on one side of the fingerboard and one string burn mark below the bridge on the top. The guitar comes in a hard case in very good condition. This guitar is a copy of a Ramirez 1A from the same time down to the finish and rosette and has a very clean and well-constructed interior bracing. Model CY-130 was one of the concert models made by Kazuo Yairi at that time. This model is also known as “Conquistador” due to the headstock carving and bright eye-catching wood colors on the back and sides. There is absolutely no comparison of this guitar to the current factory-made guitars by Cordoba, Ramirez, Esteve, Alhambra, etc. This guitar puts any factory-made guitar I’ve played to shame in both sound and build quality.
The guitar has the typical Spanish sound of a Ramirez 1A with deep powerful bass and clear singing moody trebles that balance well with the bass. It sounds better than most original Ramirez 1A guitars from the same period I have played. If you are looking for a vintage Ramirez 1A and cannot afford to spend several thousand on one, this guitar is a great alternative at a fraction of the price. The guitar has a very open and vibrant sound across all strings as well as up and down the neck all the way to and beyond the 12th fret as illustrated by the recording below.
The action setup makes it very easy to play (less than 3 mm treble side and less than 4 mm bass side at the 12th fret). There are no buzzing or playability issues anywhere along the neck. The frets are in very good shape and have been polished and leveled and the fingerboard conditioned. The neck is straight and there is lots of room on the saddle to go lower with the action if needed.
The guitar will come with a set of La Bella 850 Gold nylon strings. These are among the most generic nylon strings available and allow the guitar to bring out its voice without coloring or exaggerating it. This guitar does not need carbon strings to sound great. It has more than enough volume and clarity with the most basic nylon strings.
