Tárrega, Francisco - Preludio sobre los Grupettos - D04

Post by tateharmann » Mon Sep 25, 2017 5:12 pm

I thought I'd share some recordings of my progress at playing without fingernails on gut strings (per Emilio Pujol). The first recording was made shortly after cutting my nails off in 2015. The sound is "pretty" I guess but it's definitely on the quiet/thin side. It's pretty common to decide at this early stage that you don't like the sound and go back to using nails. However, thanks to Rob MacKillop, I persevered and really tried to learn the technique properly. So, the other recording (2017) of the same prelude on the same guitar with gut and silk strings is my progress after about 2 years. I'm sure the sound will continue to improve but I can definitely hear a difference in these two recordings. The latter has a thick, round sound while retaining the sweetness of flesh playing. Let me know what you all think..

I like both of them, Tate. And you play so poetically, I'm sure Tárrega would love them. Keep up the great work!

Roger that, good stuff. Their may be hope for me and my nailess plunking.... unlikely but you gave me hope!

Thanks for the feedback folks! There is something special about playing Tárrega without nails on a smaller bodied guitar strung up in gut and silk :-)

I think they both have a nice sound. The second recording definitely has a bit more "definition" and it sounds more "accurate" on the strings to give a bit better tone.

Well done! I would like to hear you play a little more of a lively song to get a better idea of the sound. But, from what I hear it sounds great!

Martin

Edit: I just found more of your recordings of different songs and I really do like the sound of the flesh technique with your guitar. Very nice!

Thanks Martin! I would take a request for a livelier piece as long as it's not too difficult (no RdLA or Estudio Brillante haha). I've been thinking of tackling Tarrega's "Danza Mora" it's a little above my skill level but it's lively indeed - one of my favorites by Tarrega :)
