What do you think is the best left hand stretch exercise?

How do you practice getting stretch between the fingers? I own Pumping Nylon, but I haven't found any specific exercises there regarding stretch. I do the finger independence exercise quite a lot.

Odair's drill and the spider exercise in Pumping Nylon do help for stretching, especially in vertical direction. For horizontal stretches, scales help, also chromatic scales where you can add an extra fret spacing as you move to the next string (keep the other fingers planted, start in the high positions and move to lower positions).

The "horizontal character builders" set of exercises are about horizontal stretching of the left hand fingers (and also about slurs). They can get quite hard once you get to the 4-5-6-fret stretches as in the example below.

Thank you! I actually didn't notice that exercise when I looked in the book today. Do you know if there is a video online of someone doing that exercise? Always help to see it. Couldn't find it in Scotts DVD.

I am very fond of exercises with fixed fingers as seen in the last pages of Abel Carlevaro's Book 4. What I do is a little different, but probably came from Carlevaro or perhaps someone else. One finger per fret, I place a finger on the third string. The other three fingers play on the other strings. I also do the exercise with a fixed finger on the 6th string or 1st string.

I only do one of the exercises in a session; I don't do all of them in one session. I mark it in my practice log so that I mix it up and not neglect the exercises.

To me the point of the exercises is to make full use of shoulder, elbow, and wrist movement. As a last resort, fingers have to get involved. To me, it is more about maximum leverage from the shoulder, elbow, and wrist. And then learning coordination of finger movements rather than stretching.

Another option that springs to my mind is playing Tarrega's technical studies. A lot of chromatic scales and other stuff with stretches. These days I practice Tarrega's great Cramer etude which is full of stretching exercises, some of them being quite ugly.
