Whiffling?

Post by kirolak » Mon Jan 08, 2018 1:06 pm

Apparently birds in flight perform odd rolls & turns, even to the extent of flying upside down, in order to shake the air/wind off their wings before coming in to land.

I wonder if guitarists do the same sort of thing? :) I find myself flicking my left hand down quickly in between certain phrases, probably as a reflex action to release the muscles (?) & in most videos on the net, one can see professional guitarists doing the same sort of thing, I think.

Is there an actual technique involved, or it is just a reflex action? Silly question, but it bugs me!

I doubt there is any technique. It just seems to come naturally, in some cases a physical reaction to the music’s emotional impact perhaps...

During difficult passages on certain instruments, air pressure builds up between the fingers. Flicking them in that way releases the air and prepares the fingers to land securely on the next notes. Pianists who do that are called "whifflers," but this is the first time I have seen that term applied to guitarists.

There’s air pressure building up, but I think it’s mostly hot air! 😂

 I think the pressure that’s building is from hot air?

Sorry. .....double post. I was sitting in a Chic-Fil-A having some "chicken mini's" and a cup of coffee, while waiting for a doctor's appointment, and I was on my phone. It didn't look like the first 'attempt' to post was successful, so I tried again. .....don't know how to delete a post???

No need to delete the second post, Doug; your comment was worth making twice.
