What a relief! 10-string arrives in one piece!

Post by RobMacKillop » Thu Oct 04, 2018 10:29 am

Just a quick message to say my Juan Hernandez 10-string guitar arrived in one piece, looking 100% brand new, which it kind of is. I'm letting it settle for an hour or two before tuning it up. It looks magnificent.

Cool. Enjoy.

Did you gain some understanding of what went wrong the last time? Anything to share how to avoid such accidents?

Congrats, who is the luthier?

Great news! Can't wait to hear you play it!

As the old Irish saying goes:

"May the sound of happy music, And the lilt of laughter, fill your heart with gladness, that stays forever after."

Just what I was thinking.

Been waiting to hear this news. Glad you finally got it back in one "new" piece Rob!

Hooray! I was so disappointed on your behalf when it arrived damaged. Very much looking forward to a video. Am contemplating a 10 string too so would be interested to hear how you get on adjusting to it.

Cheers, all. I've been out all day, so haven't had much time to play it. I asked them to put on the Aquila 10-string set, but I'm not sure if that was the best idea. But I'll perhaps let them play in for a few days. The action is low, the strings beautifully spaced. It's in Yepes' tuning, where it will remain for the foreseeable future. Gilbert Isbin has written me twelve new pieces, so I'll be busy for some time.

As for coming to visit my room, Altophile, you might be dissapointed. I have only four instruments, as I usually sell in order to buy. But four is more than enough, especially when most people struggle to get one.

Did they (the makers) get compensation from the courier, do you know?

Thanks.

I've purposefully kept out of the blame game between luthier and courier, so can't fill in any details.

I replaced the Aquila strings one to six with Savarez Red Card, hard tension, but tuned down a semitone, and the sound really blossomed, louder, and with a beautiful singing quality. I'll no doubt, as is my way, keep experimenting for a while, between string types and tensions. This is a very subjective area, or course. I'll see if I can make a video today, probably restricted to the first six strings as I haven't had time to explore the Yepes tuning yet.
