Petra Poláčková

Post by Tom Poore » Wed Jan 02, 2019 3:52 pm

Czech guitarist Petra Poláčková, an artist I admire, has released a new video in which she performs “An Malvina” by Johann Kaspar Mertz. You can find it here:

As I understand it, this is the first of seven high definition videos Poláčková recently recorded. The others will be released anon.

Enjoy.

Lovely, thanks for posting.

The standard of pro guitar playing has shot up in last couple of decades. She is a great example.

Played on a lovely 1960 Manuel Velazquez! Check out the other videos too, all beautiful performances on great guitars, including a Greg Byers, Cindy Burton, Antonio Marin, and more to follow, apparently.

These performances are outstanding. She makes each one of these guitars sound great. I can't tell which one I like best. It seems like whatever video I'm hearing at the time is the best. Then the next...

She is a great guitarist and teacher. I was lucky enough to see her perform and play for her in a masterclass in 2018.

I like them all for different reasons:
Velazquez: Gorgeous, charming tone
Byers: Power
Burton: Remarkable evenness
Chiesa: Tone, power, everything
Verrydt: Clarity, power, tone

And so on...

Yes, magnificent playing, and it's really good to hear her on this instrument. Looking forward to her other new videos.

Thank you for sharing this, I was unaware of this talented woman.
I am loving the amount of female guitarist videos on Youtube, having started following links off from an Ana Vidovic video, to discover a world of talented and expressive musicians. So much talent, and so many wonderful interpretations.
This girl is my current favourite. She is so talented, and has a beautiful, expressive style. She plays with a quartet in Germany as well as her solo work.
I love watching her take 'an enjoyable journey' through each piece she presents. Truly a future 'name'.
Stephanie Jones, and I hope you enjoy her video as much as I enjoyed the one you shared.

Hi Peter,

What do you think about the 2015 Byers guitar that she is playing? Sounds a bit like a Connor guitar.
Have you ever played either?

I haven’t played either a Byers or a Connor. The sound of the Byers on this videoclip didn’t really appeal to me though.

Now, as for the Cyndy Burton, just ‘wow’. Now THAT’S a guitar I would happily own. A little surprising as she is best known for her French polishing.

No, Jeffrey Elliott makes his own guitars, which Burton French polishes. The Cyndy Burton guitar is made by her. They are a couple but make their own instruments (apparently).

Visited with them when I purchased my Elliott. Now she just does the french polish of his guitars and assist in his restorations. I played this guitar but for some reason did not blow me away. I have owned and played both Connors and Byers. Much prefer Byers as much more beautiful IMO. Connor is loud and plays easily but thats it IMO. Byers much more beautiful and musical tone.

Listened to all the videos and she is so incredible in so many ways. Thats why Armin keeps bringing her back each year.
