Repertoire piece that uses rest strokes

Post by Amy Gaudia » Sun Feb 24, 2019 3:25 am

Hi,

Can someone list a few examples from the classical repertoire in which rest strokes are used?

"Lagrima" and "Adelita" by Tarrega both can benefit from rest stroke use. Also the "Estudio in E minor" of Tarrega works with rest strokes as well.

After met my teacher, I am using a lot rest stroke with his advice, as mentioned above we have studied Lagrima and Adelita with rest stroke, I realized that rest stroke enriches the tone. Besides of these, we are currently studying Romance (anonymous) and Feste Lariane. For Romance and Feste Lariane-variation 1- Only for “a” finger, I play all notes rest stroke.

Hope it helps :)
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

Sor Op35 No 22 (Segovia 5)
Carcassi Op 60 No 19 (Noad #48)
Carcassi Op 60 No 3 (Noad #31)
Spanish Romance (near the end of Fredrick Noad's Solo Guitar Playing Book 1

I like to use rest stroke on the melody for the Catalan folk songs (Miguel Llobet arrangements). You need to pay attention with these pieces because the rest stroke does not always work.

Hi Amy,

I, too, am trying to improve my rest stokes by playing the sort of repertoire that is simple enough that I can focus on the character and quality of sound without there being lots of other technical requirements. I am working on the Suite Castellana by Federico Moreno Torroba, and there is plenty of opportunity for rest strokes in those pieces. They almost demand lots of color, because the melodies are otherwise pretty simple.

Best of luck,

Mark

Nice! I will check it out. I have already improved my Lagrima since paying more attention to rest strokes. I think I was already naturally using them Here an there, but now I understand why....
