Russian Folk Songs - Suggestions

Post by Urbanarcher11 » Fri Apr 05, 2019 7:56 pm

Hi guys,

Was watching a documentary on Russia which inspired me to do a YT search for folk music from this area and one of the initial YT searches for CG folk tunes on Russian brought this video

While it does say its Georgian, I thought I'd ask you guys for any recommendations for CG versions of Russian/Regional folk tunes that are your favorites.

I've got scores of a few different guitar arrangements of 'Ochi Chornya' and 'Midnight in Moscow' which must have both been international hits back in the day.

On georgian music, I went through a phase of being rather fascinated by panduri videos on Youtube.

A couple of good books that you might be interested in are: "Gregorian Chant" by Willi Apel and "The Magical Chorus" with subtitle "A History of Russian Culture from Tolstoy to Solzhenitsyn" by Solomon Volkov & translated by Antonina W. Bouis. I became interested in Russian music, too, and found these books on the internet. Just a suggestion.

Thank your the suggestions - might as well ask you if you can recommend any other books on Russian History.

There is also this nice piece from an anonym Composer and arranger. I had a strange tabulature that used music notation staves but with numbers for the notes. Don't remember well. You can also find this piece on different platforms in the net.

I used to work with Russian speaking people in a rehab setting...they absolutely loved anything by Bulat Okudjava...several cds are available..."songs from the arbat" and a "greatest hits" cd are great. Of course everything is in Russian...love his music...he is a Russian Bard...I think of him as a Russian Bob Dylan.
