Alvarez Yairi CY-118, trying to date but serial seems unusual

Post by spruceman33 » Wed Jan 17, 2018 5:12 pm

I have an Alvarez Yairi CY-118 which I bought used in 1998. I'm trying to date it but the label serial 44972 doesn't help me and neither does the number stamped on the heel: 0512 312
Can anybody make sense of these numbers and help me determine the year? I'm trying to sell it. Is $750 a decent price?

The old ones had a date on the label. The old ones were also 660mm scale length, you may want to check if its the newer 650mm scale.
I have a 1986 CY-116 and its a great guitar, I would think $750 is a good price for a guitar in very good condition. R

The first two digits of the number stamped in the heel represent the year of the Emperor of Japan up until the year 2000. In this sense 05 could be the 5th year of Heisa which would equal 1993. As they changed the numbering in 2001 to the last two digits of the year, 05 appears again in 2005, which is not reasonable for your guitar.

I’m not totally sure but believe the next two digits represent the month of production which would mean that your guitar was produced in December 1993!?

For example beanctr‘s CY116 should have a serial number starting with 61 stamped in the heel!

The serial number printed on the label is usually of no use for dating of the guitar, as it is related to the production site.
