I went with my good friend luthier Sen Goh to take a look at a 1974 one owner hardly played Yamaha GC30A. I came back very disappointed with the guitar. It had a very hollow bass and unattractive treble. This guitar is no where near my 1980 Yamaha GC30A and 2006 Yamaha GC70.

Extremely disappointed.

Thank God that I now own 2 of the finest guitar Yamaha has ever produced.

That's too bad! It was one of Yamaha's earliest GC-30A efforts. Lovely marquetry though. Why no D string? If it was hardly played, are you sure the instrument was "brought to life" by a goodly playing session and new strings?

The owner put on a new set of bass strings but he wound it the reverse because he turn the buttons the wrong way.

Heh heh, i suppose a GC42S would go nice with anything. Congratulations.

I settled on a GC32S. She is my main squeeze.
Quite a lot of guitar for a paltry sum of money that has been decently setup to play with fair action. The neck is straight with .005 relief. I would have a hard time replacing her.

Hello.
I have a bit of a mystery on my hands. Maybe you guys can help me. I have own a Toshio Kato GC3 for the last twenty years. Bought it second hand for hard earned cash as an eighteen year old. I was in contact with Yamaha a few years ago to try to find out more about the history of my guitar and was given these specifications:

Top: Solid Pine
Side & back: Rosewood
Neck: Mahogany
F. Board: Ebony
Production: 1967 to 1970

To me the guitar does not feel that old. The soundhole sticker feels newer (late serial number?) and the colour of the top looks more like cedar than pine. The tone is clear maybe a little on the bassy side.

Any ideas?
