Pieces of spruce dimensioned from 3 to 4 mm in thickness in 0.1 mm increments .
A bit more accurate than the ruler method , and less squinting and guessing .

Very ingenious, and definitely less prone to error I would think, but a bit awkward to take on a shopping trip
I bought one of these:

which fits in my wallet and works well as long as I remember how to use it

The string is supposed to be within the black area for the selected guitar type:
