60s. Lighter build with traditional bracing. Still (mostly?) 650mm.

1964-67 - for the reasons Peter mentions. I also like the looks of these guitars much more than the later ones. And not to forget, mr Kohno actually built these guitars by his own hand, and not in a factory with co-workers.

60s for sure! Tried out a couple from the 70-80s but I prefer the sound and look of the understated elegance of the 60s Kohnos.

The fan braced of Kohno had gone after 60's until Sakurai took over the shop in late 90's?

Sakurai doesn't use fan bracing as far as I know. He uses his own semi-lattice, something...

Some people believe that Kohnos guitars made from the mid 60s have better sound. These guitars generally have a 646-656mm scale length and mainly built by spruce tops, plus a variety of bracing patterns such as 5 and 7 fan. Also, Kohno won the international guitar building contest in 1967 which put him to everyone's radar.

He tended to build longer guitars (660mm) and reinforced necks with both spruce and cedar tops after the 70s. These guitars are often said to have a louder, more piano-like sound.

Practically the same period for me 1964 to1969.

I concur with the reasons stated above.

are the 60's vintage Kohno's some of the best out there? It is a very subjective question and there must be some variation within the Kohno models of that era. How do they compare with the nowadays?

A traditional fan bracing and a semi-lattice bracing both make a huge impact in tone.

Why is not including 61-63, what happened to those years?

I played two, or three Kohno's from this era, and I did not like them as much as the 64-65 that I owned and played. Why? Something I just felt I guess.
