Gear Ratio On Machine Head

Post by Chuah Hui Hsien » Tue Mar 12, 2019 1:41 am

I just know the standard measurement between rollers are 35mm on many machine head tuners. But what are the differences with various gear ratios, there are 1:14,1:16,1:18.... Are they also as important as getting the right measurement between rollers?

If my guitar has a 1:14 gear ratio, can I change to 1:16 or 1:18?Do they fit well (the rollers are 35mm anyway)?

Yes, you can put machine heads on with different gear ratios, as long as the roller spacing is the same. Gear ratios make no difference to fitment -- it just makes tuning more or less precise/fine.

Very grateful for your clarification on tuners gear ratio.
This means that I have a wider range of options for choosing the machine tuners.
