Interesting, there is a 1958 Kono for sale on e b a y right now, the label is handwritten. It has parallel bracing, so it looks like Kohno used parallel bracing before going to Spain, then he swithed to Spanish fan bracing for a decade in 60s as he learnt from Spanish masters, and then returned to parallel after 1969

It was seeing yours that persuaded me to buy mine! I imagine yours is bit more traditional sounding than mine. I like to think of yours as "Christmas tree" bracing!
Dandan, I found out that Kono's March '62 bracing continued his '61 which is 5-parallel bracing. Must I say lightly braced making it more resonant?

I see. Maybe his more experimental designs came later in the year. My guitar was completed in November.

What a stunning guitar! Congrats! :bravo: :D

Would be interesting to know if the bracing is still Kohno's 70's style parallel bracing or what I call the "lattice in lattice" bracing of recent Sakurai-Kohnos!
Thank you :) Here's a really amateurish picture of the inside, my iPhone doesn't really fit:

Hi Jon, I just noticed your pic that the lattice-braced in your Kohno is related to the parallel bracing he adapted earlier in his guitar-building career up to early 1962. It was in later in '62 that he adapted some sort of fan bracing. Apparently, he 'abandoned' fan-bracing and reintroduced parallel-bracing with an innovation we call lattice.

Here's my long-awaited (by me anyway!) entry to the club! A 1962 Masaru Kono. I have included a pic of a rather amateurish drawing I did of the bracing, which is quite unlike anything I've seen before. The sound is likewise unlike any of my other guitars, past or present.

Jon, good question!
Easy answer: like very much!
The guitar is in very good condition because of its age. The owner told me the guitar had been stored for many years and that was noted in the sound. With the new strings and with more hours of study, the guitar has taken a very charm and warm sound. The action setup makes it easy to play (it has a setup of 4 mm on the bass side and under 3 mm on the treble side at the 12-th fret). It approaches Spanish sound. I can not be more happy with her at the moment. I have put the following strings:
- Basses: Pyramid Sterling Silver Super Classic MT Guitar Strings &
- Trebles: La Bella 2001 Classical MHT Classical Guitar Strings.

Thanks Jon for your advice at the time of purchase
Ferran

I ended up selling mine. It was a fine guitar, but a bit too brash for me. Having said that, I enjoyed it while I had it.

Well mostly it'll depend on the type of strings you already prefer, but for the record Masaki Sakurai (who now makes Kohno guitars using Kohno's designs) recommends Augustine Blue Imperials which are a fairly high-tension string. I have a set on my Sakurai now and they're great, well suited to Kohnos with a strong sound and sweet highs. None of the intonation problems that used to plague Augustines.

If you like lower tension I'd recommend Dogal Diamante Strong, they actually have the same tension as D'addario Pro Arte Normals but somehow have a very strong sound, great strings.
Congrats on the new guitar!
As a new proud owner of a 1976 Sakurai No. 5 since 27 Dec 17, I am very pleased with the sweet and balanced sound across the audio spectrum, and kind of looking for info on strings that may enhance the bass. Your feedback on the Dogal Diamante Strong is particularly useful. The Sakurai has the expected action 4/3 mm, yet perhaps due to the longer scale, one 1 cm longer, I think a lower tension strings would make it more playable/enjoyable.

Many thanks to Martin and Jon, who helped provide info on the Sakurai with their wealth of knowledge and experience with these guitars!

Congratulations! What strings do you use now? Savarez Cantiga Creation 510MR works great with the Kohno's and Sakurai's that I've tried. If you want even less tension La Bella 2001 Medium, or even low?! should be e good fit.

Good luck!

I have no idea what kind of strings used by the previous owner; even when I asked the 12 Fret directly, they don't know. And like many new owners, I could experiment with new strings, but probably not right away, as still need to "condition" myself with this new toy, and for the most part, it is still playable!

As for lower tension, I've just realized it is kinda oxymoron to expect stronger bass with lower tension, will take some time to digest all info from the forum.

But thanks for your strings recommendation, I'll try them in due time! :okok:
