Giuliani, Mauro - op.139/02 Grazioso - Video

Post by powderedtoastman » Sun Dec 23, 2018 12:47 am

Hello again my good friends!
Today I have for you number 2 from the 6 pieces we know of from Giuliani's opus 139, "Prime Lezioni Progressive Per Chitarra Sola."
The facsimile indicates that it is divided into four parts and there should be 24 pieces total, but I believe I read somewhere that only the first part was ever actually published so the remaining 18 are likely lost, or maybe they were never completed to begin with.

I am a little sad that we don't get to know what the rest may have been, but I am also happy that the 6 that we do know of are awesome little miniatures. Number 1 is a snippet of a Beethoven octet I believe, so I do wonder if any others are adaptations of other composers' works, but at any rate I really like all of them and could imagine them being played as duos or trios of the bowed string instruments. I would love to get all 6 of them recorded some time in the near future, but for now here is one of them.

I hope you will enjoy!

One of my favs! I have it in a Ruggero Chiesa edition of 80 Giuliani studies. A gem for sure. Thx for posting. Really great to hear others playing pieces I know.

Thank you for this video, lovely playing of a lovely melody. And thanks too for the background info. about Op. 139. I do have the sheet music for these six pieces but I didn't know all the story. Very interesting the story about Beethoven's role in Op. 139, no. 1.

I had also heard that Giuliani played cello and was a contemporary of Beethoven. He did perform at least one of Beethoven's symphonies in Vienna. So the two men must have obviously known one another.
