I looked this up when I was learning this piece. It's Breton in origin, and was first recorded in the "Barzaz Breiz" (Ballads of Brittany) published by Théodore Hersart de la Villemarqué in 1839
A Maro is a "Death Song" or "Mourning Song" (cf Welsh Marwnad
). Pontkalleg (Marquis de Pontcallec) was the supposed leader of a "Breton Rebellion" who was executed by the French government in 1720.
I always like knowing the stories behind music!
