Hello from South Dakota

Hi everyone,

I am a classical guitar enthusiast based in the Black Hills of South Dakota. My first love is classical guitar building as a passionate hobby. I am retired from a 28 year career as a Orthopedic Hand Surgeon. I began building in High School but have only been serious and active for about 10 years.

Playing and building is time consuming so when I have a choice I make saw dust. At this point I am not selling guitars but I am using my experience to learn to build great ones. I build three days a week.

I am interested in the opinions of those on the forum to help guide my building and honing my "sound"

I do play some but I am admittedly not very accomplished.

Hello David. Welcome to the forum. Playing guitar is not essential to active participation here. I am pretty sure that a fair percentage of our Luthiers would not consider themselves as players. That section of the forum is, of course, one of our most popular areas for players, builders and others.

If you have not already done so, please have a look at our welcome page for more information about the forum and its rules. Since you have already posted two messages you should be able to access all the mp3 files and videos in our recording sections, all the members' scores and levels 1 - 3 of the Delcamp score collection, and post your own scores and recordings. After 20 posts you may subscribe to the 020 usergroup with associated membership privileges including access to the higher levels of sheet music in Delcamp's library (see here).

It is helpful if members include their location in their Profile - click on your username and edit.

See you around.

Hi David,
How would you describe your 'sound'? I think it's great that honing your sound is your goal. It's one thing to have a great looking guitar, yet another to have one that looks and sounds great.
Make good sounding sawdust!

Retired hand surgeon? Excellent! You can help us with what *not* to do in terms of poor hand positioning technique and avoiding injury! Good hand stretches/exercises welcome here!
