Favorite Guitar?

Post by Petemayo » Thu Dec 21, 2017 12:25 am

What do you like?

I have had a Gianinni since 1976. Maybe time for an upgrade. Recommendations?

1976 was a good year. Two of my favorite guitars date from that year. My recently acquired 1976 Ryoji Matsuoka is rapidly becoming my favorite -compteting with my 1976 Masaru Matano. One the Matsuoka is spruce, the Matano is cedar - I have rarely heard their equal. All my old guitars sound and play better than the newer ones I have tried. So newer isn't necessarily better - but will probably cost a lot more! These days its easy to find nice old guitars that may not have been played that much. My recommendation, old Japanese gakki made guitars outperfom many of their newer competitors.

Have fun finding an upgrade, but keep the old friend. I give mine to my sons, so I can still play them sometimes!
Masaru Matano Clase 400 (1971)
Masaru Matano Clase 500 (1976)
Ryoji Matsuoka M60 (1976)
Hirade Model 7 (1977)
Guild Classical Mark IV (1980)
Kakuo Yairi H5 (1985)
M. Horabe 35 (1990)
Cordoba Flamenco 45FCE (2006)

1832 Panormo, Fecit model. So small and easy to play. Every time I pick it up I play a piece of history.

An impossible question to answer, as I change my mind from one day to another... ;)

But right now I have two favorites:

Curt Claus Voigt (2007) - Torres model and my Federico Sheppard (2016)

Kind regards
/Jon
1977 - Kuniharu Nobe No.15
2006 - Kolya Panhuyzen
2007 - Curt Claus Voigt

Feel free to ask me anything about Japanese classical guitars.

My favorite guitar of those I've played was a 90s Tony Johnson, which was, and still may be, owned by Richard Wright. Hauntingly good.

Stephen Hill from Granada, played his guitars for 15 years and still haven’t found anything as good.

Among the ones I own, two of them, by the same luthier: a "Hauser" and a "Bernabe", both by Darren Hippner.

I've owned a couple od dozen cg's and never played before ordering. Most of the time I got what I expected.

That is encouraging. My Gianinni has a slightly narrower neck than most classical guitars and for some reason doesn't seem to project much. Perhaps the body is not as wide as others.

Today it is a 65 Contreras, 660 scale, spruce, Indian. It is an incredible guitar, great presence and loves to be played hard.

I went from electric to cg because I could no longer play the narrow neck. Even a 50mm neck limits me. I also find anything over a 650 mm scale difficult.

David Pace. I own 2 of his guitars and my favorite happens to be whichever one I am playing. A guitar of his was reviewed last year in Classical Guitar Magazine. Mine were both custom built and I never once doubted that there would be a good outcome. I was right.
