Powell, Baden - Valsa Sem Nome

Post by Ray » Tue Jul 31, 2018 3:08 pm

Hi everybody, My dear friend recorded me playing this waltz yesterday at his house. He sent me the audio file (thank you my friend!) Hope you enjoy.

Constructive positive comments and compliments are welcome - negative ones too, I can take it!

Best regards, Ray

P.S. The beautiful sweet sounding colorful-tones guitar I used for this recording is my friend's Manuel Velasquez from 2002 with a spruce top with indian back and sides. The 24-bit stereo portable recorder is a TASCAM DR-100mkIII. I imported the recorded wav file into Apple's Garage Band app on my Mac and added some reverb before exporting it to mp3.

Try the 1971 version on this page:

It's worth it, although there might be better transcriptions.

Hi bert,

I have the edition published by GSP Guitar Solo in California which I play with some modifications here and there - it's very accurate to Baden's recordings and nicely printed too. Are you familiar with that edition?

I'm not familiar with that book, but the GSP books l have are accurate and nicely printed. The version I play -from the Book 'Bossa & Samba no. 4', arrangements by P. Guilleminot- is very similar, differences probably due to interpretation and technique. I noticed for example how smooth the descending notes in bar 17 were in your recording. Certainly smoother than I get them.

Just listened again to Baden Powell himself on the record Estudos. During the repeat he plays the sextuplet in bar 17 really slow and at normal speed again in bar 21. That's not in the arrangement I have and neither I think in yours. I won't do it, 'cause I have trouble enough with the sextuplet, but you might try it that way.

In your version the measure before going back to the beginning I hear "one (fermata) two (d#) and (e) three and", where in my arrangement and on the record it is "one and (d# fermata) two (e fermata) three and".
