Treble (G) Cleff with a dangling 8

Post by Guthier » Wed Jan 16, 2019 7:30 pm

Hi All, I'm new to the forum, and this question might be answered in the past (sorry for the repetition). I've notice that in most of the written music for guitar the Treble clef has a dangling 8. What that means and is there a historical background?

I think that indicates that the guitar sounds an octave lower than what you're reading.

Clef, one F.

soltirefa is spot on. Guitar music should really have been notated with the alto or the tenor clef but nobody likes those so isntead we write the music with a treble clef one octave higher than its actual pitch. The "dangling 8" is simply an 8vb sign that applies to the entire score.

All true. Only to add that whether the little 8 is there or not makes no difference, the historical convention has been to miss it out, some modern editions include it but at a guess probably the minority. Some other transposing-by-octave instruments take the same approach, from memory, the double-bass (down) and the piccolo (up) leave the 8 out.
