This is an interesting point. The photo of the damaged case on the conveyor belt shows the tape pretty clearly. While it is difficult to say where the damage occurred, it was certainly taped up in the destination. There are two conflicting reports about whether a seat was reserved. One says she reserved a seat for the instrument 40 days in advance but the ground crew in Brazil refused to honor it whilea different report says she was offered a seat for the instrument but refused.
I guess we will never find out the "truth".
