Are you Mad at Windows 10 download speed

Post by meouzer » Sun Jan 07, 2018 8:25 pm

I'm interested in knowing whether those with Windows 10 have slow download speeds.

I got a new Windows 10 computer but almost had to return it because my download speeds
were 5-30 kbs, which is 50-300 times slower than my guaranteed rate of 1.5 mbs. Century Link
told me a lot of people have problems with Windows 10. 1.5 mbs isn't much and it can be quickly
eaten into by all those Windows 10 apps talking to their owners. As soon as I powered on the computer
and before login, the modem light would start flickering like crazy. After two months had gone by and
just by sheer luck, Century Link had to rewire the house and give me the latest modem, which fixed the
problem. But a lot of people are probably infuriated with Windows 10 if their bandwidth isn't so great
to begin with.

Isn't speed more a function of your internet provider? I have Comcast's high speed service, and I'm getting 300 mbps download speeds with Windows 10.

Google "Windows 10 slow download speeds." A lot of search results come up.

I know recently Windows has sent some huge updates that really slow things down while they're downloading/installing.

I'm happily still using Window 7. The problem will come when I replace my PC this year. New W7 PCs are still widely available, mostly aimed at the business market, but as the end of support is 2020 (I think) it looks as though I will have to succumb to getting a W10 machine.

I'm mad at these updates which result in my having to uninstall and then reinstall some of my most-used apps.

Yep. Our DSL speed for downloads went nearly to zero when my husband got a Windows 10 machine. We called up Verizon and complained. They checked our line and said it was fine... it had to be one of the devices using our router that was loading it down. We turned off all devices and then...one by one tried them. It was the new Windows machine. A bit of research led my husband to find it was a process called delivery optimization or some such thing that kept trying to update everything (updates from more than one place)
It is under advanced options, update delivery. Turn *off* updates from more than one place. This thing searches the internet constantly and uses all the bandwidth even when not updating.
You can’t have it off forever if you need to update, but just know that your internet speed will be trashed until it is done. After it is finished....all night downloading, then you can turn it off again.
Even when my husband set it not to download between hours of 7am to11pm, that process STILL used all the bandwidth during the excluded times!

However, the Win updates also chewed up half my 50GB monthly download allowance!

@ meouzer
As a long-time W7 user I had to buy a new laptop last Christmas and had to change to W10 . To be honest, I had some nightmares over changing from W7 to W10 (having skipped W8 .. ) .
I was actually surprised how easy the change was. No problems with elderly software. No problems with speed. No problems at all. I think that download speed problems are related to the internet connection rather to computer speed.
Best wishes from magie!

When downloading bigger stuff, it may pay to plug in a network cable instead of using the wi-fi.

Microsoft will support Win 7 until 2020 but new chip architecture will/does not support it. Intel 7th gen processors do not support Win 7 and are only available with Win 10. I did read that the the AMD Ryzen processor would support it.

I have been using Win 10 since its release and there are some things I don't like but I have had no issues with it or download speeds.

The last update to Windows 10 was a doozy. I had to leave my work laptop at work updating overnight due to the extent and slowness. I estimated that it was going to take something like 16 hours at the rate it was updating when I left it going. I had to get the early birds to the office to check on it for me and shut it down if done. It was.
