The Theremin - kind of like air guitar

It looks like air guitar, but this actually requires skill.

Theremin!! . . . I've been trying to remember that name for years! When I was a kid (hundreds of years ago), the instrument used to be associated with spooky / weird film music.

I could get a similar effect with a violin bow on a saw. Kept me amused for hours.

Never thought of it that way, but yeah, it is indeed a kind of air guitar!

The big question: how does it sound when you actually start to play the one like the other! :)

The saw has a very similar sound and is a little more portable

I'm old fashioned. I prefer the older acoustic theremins (theremen?)

The first time I came across the theremin was on the Beach Boys track Good Vibrations. The Rolling Stones also used it on Please Go Home.

You can find an excellent demonstration of the way the theremin is played by searching YouTube for Olivier Messiaen - Vocalise-Étude - theremin and piano.

Isn't this what is used on the Doctor Who theme, and probably countless other sci-fi things?
Getting better bit by bit, day by day.

I don't think so. The original version of the Doctor Who theme was made in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop - presumably using synthesisers and more recent versions don't sound as if a theremin is being used.

Earlier in that video they discuss the use of the theremin in old sci-fi movies, and she demonstrates the sound.
