What music are you listening to right now?

Talk about things that are not necessarily related to music or the guitar.

I tune in every Saturday evening to BBC Radio 3's jazz programs. Last played was "A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall" by Hudson.

Wilson Pickett, Hey Jude, a benchmark recording from 1968 with Duane Allman playing a memorable guitar solo. The session took place when Duane still was an unknown musician and not the world famous guitar heroe. The Allman brothers as a band did not yet exist by that time.
That would have been recorded in Alabama, at Muscle Shoals, I guess.

A cd I just purchased.....the “Atlantic Reed Consort”. They performed a concert this afternoon at River Dunes. It was part of the Pamlico Musical Society’s, “Concert on the River” series. It made we want to get my clarinet out and give it a spin!

Track 1 (Sanz Canarios) is nowhere near as good as John Williams - it's technically OK, but lacking any punch or drive or excitement (but that may be due to bland production). The rest is fine as mood music.

Bach's cantata "Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben", BWV 102, the 1972 Rilling interpretation. I've also been following the score while listening. The counterpoint in the opening chorus is unearthly. Just astounding.

You know he's playing on a baroque guitar with period technique, right? That's probably one huge factor in it sounding different than Williams. I, for one, love this album! I'm drawn more to the Murcia than the Sanz, though.

I hadn't realised it was a baroque guitar, but it's the phrasing of the triplets and lack of attack that compares badly with Williams. I don't think it's purely about the instrument - I think it's about the musician's intent. However, it is partly the production values - a lot of it sounds like the mic is far from the instrument and missing any immediacy.
But I'd give the album 5 stars rounded up from 4.5, as I've always been a sucker for world mood music.
