Yes, I'd agree with you there...the sound engineering leaves a bit to be desired. And, Jakob's playing is rather even and lacking in flare. For someone a bit more exciting, but still on baroque guitar, check out Rolf Lislevand:

I've been listening to Mendelssohn quite a lot in the past few weeks. The album I'm now listening to is the complete recording of Lieder ohne Worte played by Balázs Szokolay.

Hillary Hahn and the LASO, JS Bach, violin concerts. It's a SACD, quite expensive but the acoustic quality is simply amazing.
