Churchill wasn't alone - that was a lie he made up after the war. The pre-war Hansard reports prove it.

What is said in the House of Commons is written down in the Hansard Reports - they are the minutes of those meetings - all those people who stood against Hitler are recorded in them.

Of course in addition to lying, Churchill was using hindsight dishonestly. But it has been pointed out that when a war causes 10 million deaths, it's quite a good thing not to have been responsible for initiating it, and that's a subtlety up to coping with which Churchill's brain wasn't.

Play the game for more than you can afford to lose. Only then will you learn the game.
-- Winston Churchill (I think)
Never, never, never, never, never take Churchill's advice.

(I have endless admiration for Churchill's standing up to Hitler when everyone else caved. And for the people of Britain! What courage! But that's bad advice. Although maybe in context it makes sense.)
Oh no, I think it's very good advice, thinking metaphorically. It's like Alexander the Great burning his own ships. But I figured as soon as I typed in the name "Churchill" it would kick up a flurry somewhere

"It's like Alexander the Great burning his own ships."

Yeah but see, practically speaking this is bad advice too. Ask your wife about all of this.

It was quite hard to see what was amusing ddray. Churchill was a very keen gambler, literally, so it could easily have been a quote.

You're right. My apologies. That was uncalled for.
