PREVIEW: New CD coming, "Legacies"

Post by David Norton » Sun Oct 14, 2018 8:03 pm

Back in the recording studio again today. The new project is a solo guitar CD, "Legacies", with music played on each of the three "legacy guitars" intended for the three grandkids. The first set recorded (which will be the final set on the CD) is six selections from "La Foret Mysterieuse" by Belgian composer Yves Carlin. Recorded on a 2017 guitar built by Andy Culpepper, and dedicated to my granddaughter Xenavieve. Note the way the rosette creates the letter "X" for her, over and over again. The clearest "X" appears at the bottom of the fretboard.

NOTE: the sweatshirt says "Traveling 33 rpm in an iPod world".

CORRECTION: Planned release date springtime 2019. (Stephen Kenyon just won a free copy for spotting this!)

That X thing is clever. I didn't realize the connection.

That recording mic looks a lot fancier than your usual Flip camcorder.

This is being done at a full-on real life recording studio in Salt Lake City, the same place where Cindy Spell and I recorded "Avenues" in 2014/15.

Two-thirds of this CD is now done. Tracks recorded thus far:

1. CARCASSI - Etude Op. 60, #4
2. CARCASSI - Etude Op. 60, #2
3. CARCASSI - Etude Op. 60, #16
4. CARCASSI - Etude Op. 60, #3
5. CARCASSI - Etude Op. 60, #10

6. NORTON - Summer Echoes
7. NORTON - Autumn Pastoral
8. NORTON - Winter Now is King
9. NORTON - Spring Dance

10 - 15 - not recorded yet

16. SOR - Lesson Op. 60, #17
17. SOR - Lesson Op. 60, #14
18. SOR - Lesson Op. 60, #12
19. SOR - Lesson Op. 60, #20
20. SOR - Lesson Op. 60, #7

21 - 24 - not recorded yet

25. CARLIN - Le gnome triste
26. CARLIN - Le troll sautillant
27. CARLIN - La fee qui swingue
28. CARLIN - Le gobelin reveur
29. CARLIN - L'elfe ricaneur
30. CARLIN - La danse des squelettes

The Carcassi and Sor sets were done today, 2008 Hill Rodriguez. As I am turning 60 this year, doing things from "Op. 60 sets" seems appropriate.
The Norton and Carlin sets were done last October/November, 2017 Culpepper.
Last group to be done on 2015 Redman. Some uncertainty still on repertoire for those tracks.

Everything looks to still be a "Go" for a May release date.

Nice work, David. What could be better than sharing what you love with your grandchildren?

Here's the "working draft" of the cover label. It will get primped up professionally, of course, but the concept is there:

The good news is, all the selections are pretty short. The bad news is, 30 = 30! So yeah, quite a bit of studio time is needed.

I like the title. Funny thing, my eldest grandchild (30 y.o.) and I were just talking about doing a CD together (a similar sentiment). The logistics will be an interesting challenge - he lives in Arizona.

Great project, David. I'm especially glad to see you're recording some Carlin pieces. He writes some very enjoyable music.

Tracks 10 - 15 were recorded today:

10. MILAN - Pavana #3
11. MILAN - Pavana #2
12. MILAN - Pavana #4
13. MILAN - Pavana #1
14. MILAN - Pavana #5
15. MILAN - Pavana #6

Recorded with my 2015 Joseph Redman guitar, destined (in all good time?) for grandson Alexander. Liberal use was made of the open bass B and D strings; yes I know Milan's vihuela didn't have those strings available, but they sound well in context. I also added some ornamentation not included in the vihuela score, not enough to drive a renaissance musicologist to tears but more than the usual straight-laced versions.
