The Making of a Concerto

Post by DenisJ_III » Wed Dec 20, 2017 9:32 am

Wynton Marsalis writes a violin concerto for Nicola Benedetti.
I saw this programme when it was first on TV and am so pleased that it has appeared on the Tube, giving a wider audience the chance to view it.
For anyone interested in music, it is a great insight into the process of collaboration and the tensions between composer and performer as a new piece takes shape.
Well worth a look.

Very interesting and at times rather uncomfortable to watch. What wasn't mentioned in the programme is the enormous length of this thing, at almost 50 minutes! - it would have taken nearly all the programme's hour to hear it all. Which is pretty weird when we saw and heard lots of things about it and about the two central characters.
The consensus of the reviews I've read is that its a bit long for its material, rather cluttered, like the composer squashed everything he was ever going to say about the violin into the one work. Certainly, the short bits we did hear did seem over-scored which again is a danger when faced with a whole orchestra - to write for it all!
