Is 20th fret necessary? how many pieces have it?

Post by SteveL123 » Sun Dec 23, 2018 6:31 pm

The only piece I play currently that needs the 19th fret (B5 on high e) is Barrios's Allegro Solemne, never mind the 20th. Please name some pieces that need the 20th fret.

From pics I've seen of Smallman's and Dammann's, 2 very highly regarded Luthiers, their guitars only have 19 frets. What's the scoop? :?:

No it doesn't need it^ plenty of people play that piece without the top C.

Not the 20th, but some arrangements of the Moonlight Sonata (first movement) use B5, the 19th fret on the high E string too.
I don't know of any pieces using a 20th fret. I would be curious to find about them, if there are any, too.

Yep. But the c is still there, and I believe that’s what the thread is all about? :)

Of course you can live without it. But it doesn’t hurt to have it I guess. I believe Williams glued a match to the fretboard in order to play “El Sueño” early on in his career.

Kinda stupid not to have it in the 21st century, with composers writing for it.
Lester Devoe Flamenco Negra
Lester Devoe Flamenco Blanca
Aparicio Flamenco Blanca with RMC pickup
Bartolex 7-string with RMC pickup
Giannini 7-string with Shadow pickup
Sal Pace 7-string archtop

It's primarily useful for arrangements. A lot of Baroque keyboard pieces, including Bach's go up to top C.

There are also a few Romantic pieces by Coste that go up to top D (22 frets).

So top C is not "necessary" unless you want to play Sueño with it & a couple of other pieces maybe but you can never have too large a range when you want to make arrangements except where it becomes near impossible to play or sound poor (high notes with frets that are too small & no sustain or power, low notes that are too hard for the RH thumb to reach / find and lower than any arrangement would realistically require).

I only use it when I practise my C-major scales :D

Well my guitar ends at 19th fret.. but again it's an almost generic guitar brand.
