US $..950 Ikkoh Kawada model 1000 cedar 1976, Mississauga, Canada

1976 Ikkoh Kawada 1000 Classical Guitar
Solid Cedar Top
Solid Indian Rosewood Back and Sides
Bone Nut (52mm) and Bone Saddle
650mm Scale Length

This guitar was made by the well-respected Japanese luthier Ikkoh Kawada in the golden period of classical guitar making in Japan. The build quality of the guitar is outstanding and shows a great pride of workmanship. Ikkoh Kawada apprenticed in Mitsuru Tamura’s workshop and in 1974 started his own shop which is active to this day making high-quality classical guitars and selling them at much higher prices than the one I have for sale here. This guitar is internally constructed with a 7-brace fan following traditional Spanish construction that Ikkoh Kawada learned from his teacher Mitsuru Tamura. The interior is very clean and perfectly scalloped braces and great attention to detail.

The condition of the guitar is excellent. The only visible marks on the guitar are a few shallow marks on the top and the rest of the guitar is in mint condition. There are no cracks or visible repairs on the guitar. The tuners of the guitar have been replaced with new ones because one of the rollers of the original tuners was broken. The top is made from very high quality cedar and the back and sides from Indian rosewood which looks quite striking and resembles Brazilian rosewood a lot in the light and dark streaks in the wood. The guitar was priced at 100,000 Yen in 1976 which is equivalent to a Masaru Kohno model 10, so a pretty high price at that time.

The sound of the guitar is warm and Spanish with deep basses and strong clear trebles. It has great volume and sustain all around the fretboard as well as excellent sound separation string-to-string. It’s a concert guitar in every aspect and sounds better than current guitars being made that cost three times as much. The guitar is light and very resonant. The basses penetrate your body when you play it and the trebles sing with excellent clarity.

The action setup makes it very easy to play (about 2.8 mm treble side and about 4.0 mm bass side at the 12th fret). There are no buzzing or playability issues anywhere along the neck. The frets are in good shape and have been polished and leveled and the fingerboard conditioned. The neck is straight and there is enough room on the saddle to go lower with the action if needed.

The guitar will come with a set of La Bella 850 Gold nylon strings. These are among the most generic nylon strings available and allow the guitar to bring out its voice without coloring or exaggerating it. This guitar does not need carbon strings to sound great. It has more than enough volume and clarity with the most basic nylon strings.

For a sound sample of this exact guitar, please see the following video on youtube:

I will only accept PayPal for payment. I will ship to Canada and the Continental United States. The guitar will be shipped in its hard case well packed with strings loosened. The case is old and used but all latches work and so does the handle. I have bought and sold a long list of classical guitars over the years, so buy with confidence.

Shipping: $80 USD (Canada Post: 4-6 Business Days) to Canada and the US only

Customs Fees: Buyer pays any required customs fees if shipped to the US. In my experience customs fees are very rarely assessed for guitars that I have shipped to the United States from Canada. I sell guitars all the time and I don`t remember when was the last time that happened as it has happened very few times.

Looks in great condition for a guitar approaching 50 years old! Love the rosette as well.

No new holes had to be made as the new Gotohs are an exact fit with the old ones.

Price drop to $950 USD plus $80 USD for shipping. How many guitars hand-made by a respected luthier can you get at this price?

I would have bought it just to try out, if there were not taxes and CITES requirements to Sweden :(

That's such an interesting guitar. What's the string spacing at the saddle?

Taxes I can't help you with... I pay taxes every time I buy a guitar from outside Canada and there is no way around that. You do buy guitars from Japan, right? How do you deal with the CITES restrictions in those cases? I have bought guitars from many places in the world and have not had issues with that. I think the reason is because these guitars a priced low (below $1000 USD) and they just stay below the radar. Of course, they are also made long time ago where there were no restrictions.

The nut is 52 mm wide and the string spacing (measured from center of one string to center of the next) is 8.5 mm

Is there enough saddle showing to be able to lower the action, if necessary?

There is some room left on the saddle to go lower as per the pictures I have posted. The action is already set at the most typical classical action as it is now.
