Tárrega, Francisco - Capricho Arabe - Gut and Silk Strings - Video

Post by RobMacKillop » Mon Nov 05, 2018 6:47 pm

Such a difficult piece, more difficult than it should be, to get right. I think I got it right once, about 30 years ago. Everyone "knows" how it should be - I hope this one isn't too far away.

Gut and Silk strings, 415 pitch, no nails.

Wonderful Rob. I love the full and rich sound you get on the can't afford a Torres Torres! Sounds like heaven to me,

When you say/write gut and silk - are those the Damian strings or something else? (Edit: No need to reply. I see now from the other thread that they are not the Damian strrings)

Thanks for sharing as always,

Cheers, Chris. Gut and Silk 900 are from Aquila, based on Pujol's measurements, said to have been used by Tárrega. They're good, but I prefer Damian's gut if I can get some. The silk-core strings, wound in silver, are quite dead sounding, and are prone to breaking overnight. Aquila recommends tuning them down overnight, which I do, but even then I'll find one broken of a morning. So, as a set they are expensive. I found this set in a drawer from about four years ago. My go-to alternative would be the Savarez White Card set, which are cheap, or the Pepe Romero antiquated set, I forget what they are called, and they are impossible to get in the UK.

Thanks for the info Rob. I was not aware of the the Aquila strings. I've used Damian strings based on your recommendation and they've been great, except for my nail playing making them rough up early. But I'm only a dabbler in the gut string word, not an aficionado like you are. Those Aquila's certainly work well for you on the new guitar based on what I can hear on the video.

Cheers, Chris

If I’m allowed to assist, these are the GLOW set. BTW there is a source in Germany, if this is of help for you. Search for classical strings and select the <untitled> website.

Apologies for this digression and back to your Capriccio Arabe! Just wonderful! :merci:

One of my favorites and my ultimate goal piece (want a billion dollars too, not getting that either)... you did a great job in my humble opinion, fluid and great tone. Thanks Rob!

Cheers, BB. Well, I can play it, but nobody is giving me a billion dollars...and that's not right! Good luck!
