The trick within the trick is for a 4/4 piece to add 3 beats count in, the recording starts on the fourth beat and you start playing on the next beat. This ensures your first note's attack is captured properly (though some recorders have fancy pre-record buffers for that very purpose).
Just to let anyone interested know that the Zoom H5 will allow either pre-count or pre-record. So the trick above is quite useful. Not sure if other portable recorders would be more flexible.
