Please recommend external mics for me

Hello,

I have a Zoom H4N recorder, but I'd like to begin to use external mics. Can you recommend some for me?

Louis, I don't know enough to have a recommendation, but it might be helpful if you define a budget..good mics can get expensive.

Thanks, I don't know enough about them, but say $100 to $200 for example.

I'd spend more and get it right first time. The Rode Nt5 is popular. From memory a matched pair is about £500. There are some long microphone discussions in the recording section here.

For simplicity it might be better to focus budget on one better mic - not least you can get another one later on. Unless you might upgrade the record device later I would keep the mic in proportion to the cost of the Zoom. If you might go for a separate interface (e.g. Focusrite etc) later then investing in more for the mic would make sense longer term. Also factor in a mic stand and decent cable.

For the budget I don't think that there is any mic that can beat the Line Audio CM3.

Get one and when budget permits get a second one, solo guitar sounds so much better in stereo.
