Documentaries to learn more about classical music

Post by timhansenuk » Fri Jul 13, 2018 8:00 pm

Hi all!
I was wondering if anyone can recommend any documentaries that show the development of classical music, hopefully with examples of the different styles of music and instruments.

Just type History Of Classical Music into ytube, and you will get lots.

That's both unhelpful and actually quite rude, why did you bother replying?

Obviously there is youtube, oh and google too, and libraries, oh and shops! None of which is what I asked about.

I asked for *recommendations* I.E. documentaries that people felt was of particular value and interest and who would like to share, so that other people can gain and enrich their enjoyment.

Calm down, sir. I never intended to be rude. I'm sorry you read it that way.

You are the one that seems to have a bee in his bonnet, who would troll posts on a guitar forum.

Tim, it is easy for things to be taken in a way that they were never meant, but Rob is a very respected, knowledgeable and very helpful member of this forum. I've never known him to be deliberately rude to anyone at all.

Honestly, why bother to come into a thread and just write 'use youtube' It's such a condescending thing to do and say, and worse it kills the thread and any potential for discussion. I do not understand why anyone could think that is a helpful or productive thing to do.

Calm down man, Rob was being kind to point you in a direction at all. Youtube is bound to be full of the information you seek.

Some years ago there a few very approachable series presented by Howard Goodall on UK TV some of which are currently available on YouTube.

Howard Goodall's Story of Music (6 Episodes)

Howard Goodall's Big Bangs (about significant developments in music, mostly about the early developments)

Howard Goodall's Great Dates (though the one that impressed me most, 1937, isn't on YT)
Hermanos Conde 1968, Stephen Frith 2007 "Guijoso", Christopher Dean 2018, Ana Maria Espinosa 2014

Another hat tip to Howard Goodall.
Just listen to him.
His thoughts on the Beatles are second to none.

I ran across three of Julian Bream's 1978 masterclass documentaries recently. Working on the covered piece or not, they're a musical education to watch. His care for the music is unmatched.

Just search "Julian Bream Masterclass 1978" on Youtube and they'll come up.

Search YouTube for "Bernstein unanswered question" it is a six (I think) part series of lectures by Leonard Bernstein and is a very insightful look into Western Classical music.

I recently watched a documentary called 'Great Composers: Episode 1 Johann Sebastian Bach' on Youtube and although not exactly showing the progression of classical music as a whole it shows the life of a pivotal player in classical music as it exists today.

Not about classical music per se but I enjoyed the DVD 'Genius Within The Inner Life of Glenn Gould'
