Hello All
I'm a Classical Builder near Santa Cruz, CA. I've been building for about five years and studied guitar building with Brian Burns up in Fort Bragg, CA. I'm currently offering guitar #17, finished a few month back. My guitars are French polished and include a hard shell case. I only deal face to face as of now, so I would have to meet up with potential buyers to show them the guitar. Santa Cruz is close to the Bay Area. Please PM me if interested.

I had the opportunity to play one of Joel's guitars last summer (a spruce top). It was a very good instrument. The workmanship was superb and the guitar was comfortable to play. Also, for a new guitar it had a surprisingly open sound. Joel is not bound by tradition when it comes to the design look of his instruments. I think it is also worthwhile noting that Joel is a fine classical guitarist, this can't but help the quality of his builds. Santa Cruz is a fun city to visit, so there are two good reasons to take a trip.

Best, John

Interesting instrument, Joel. I'm wondering if the spruce strip in the soundboard has some acoustic purpose, or is it there for visual aesthetics? Thanks.

The spruce strip is not enough spruce to really effect the sound too much. However I believe I’m getting a warm sound with a hint of spruce clarity due to the fact of the bracing of the sound board. I used some cleats and a bigger rosette graft and a brace was moved slightly to re-enforce the spruce joints. All those factors led to what I think is a very beautiful warm cedar sound with just a hint of clarity due to the extra wood and glue used. The spruce strip was intended strictly as a visual aesthetic, but turned out it enhanced the sound.

Hello Fred. Come on by and give it a spin! My next two builds, #19 and #20, which are just about done, will be more traditional in style (one does have a rosewood neck, which was a pain in the butt to carve). #21 and #22 are a bit different. The backs are made up of multple head plates of different woods (Macasser ebony, Madagascar rosewood, Koa, blood wood and some cocobolo). I’ve also used a wood burner to decorate one of the rosettes, it’s been fun. You can check out more photos at my Instagram page if you’d like. Joeldimauroguitars
