Emperor Nero and the Violin

Post by Andrew Pohlman » Mon Jan 14, 2019 6:28 pm

Okay - I know this is guitar forum, but some of us are pretty good historians. So I want to ask, could Nero have really played the violin?

The short answer is no - the violin was 16th century, invented in 15nn something. Nero was before 100 AD, I think. So if Nero could not have actually played a violin while Rome burned, what was he playing? Or is it all a glorious satire on Roman leaders?

"If Nero played anything, it would probably have been the cithara, a heavy wooden instrument with four to seven strings—but there is still no solid evidence that he played one during the Great Fire."

Did Nero really fiddle while Rome burned?

I'm fairly certain he played the keytar.

Yes. And I'm equally sure he utilized a brainwave to MIDI converter too. :D

OF COURSE Nero played the violin! It's as historical as Ben Hur's wristwatch in the chariot race. We've all seen it in the movies!
All pirates and medevial folk had perfect white teeth and clean clothes. All women are always perfectly made up when waking up in the morning... In the 24th century, people will never go to the toilet - see Star Trek...

A lyre if anything, but according to Tacitus he wasn't even in Rome at the time.
