Tarrega transcriptions

Post by Tom Phillips » Sat May 18, 2019 5:40 am

Hi all,

I just discovered that Francisco Tarrega made an arrangement of Chopin's op. 9 no. 2! It's absolutely lovely! This got me wondering, what other famous piano works has he transcribed (other than the obvious Serenata Espanola, Asturias, etc.). I know he also did the Adagio from Beethoven's Sonata Pathetique; imagine playing these two plus one more transcription in a set! Do you guys have any ideas? One in D would be perfect!

Thanks

hi Tom
You can always try La Paloma, it is a beautiful transcription by Tarrega in D.
Best regards,
Malan

Search for Giulio Tampalini's 4 CD recording of the complete Tárrega - there'll be a list on the CD cover.

In the book "Tárrega, Opere per chitarra, Vol. 4 - Trascrizioni (Gangi-Carfagna edition, Bèrben), there are several
transcriptions of romantic pieces in D, e.g. A. Rubinstein: Romanza, F. Schubert: Adieu, R. Schumann: Barcarola
and some more.

I've been procrastinating finding a list of all of Tarrega's transcriptions and making a Spotify playlist of recordings of all of the original works.

Selección de obras clasicas y romanticas : arregladas y transcriptas para guitarra

Out of print, but I bought a used copy somewhere, I don't remember where. Lovely Tarrega arrangements, edited by Isais Savio.

Available via library exchange from at least a few libraries, which can be found by internet search. I am never sure which URL links are allowed here, so will not post where I found it. But if an internet neophyte like me can find it, I'm sure that you can too!

The pieces arranged by Tarrega in "Selección de obras clasicas y romanticas" are:

Bach: Fuga 1st Violin Sonata
Bourree 2nd Violin Sonata
Haydn: Andante
Mozart: Andante Cantabile Sonata K 330 (tune 6th string to D)
Beethoven: Adagio Sonata Op. 13 (Patetica)
Schubert: Momento Musical, Op. 94, #3 (tune 6th string to D)
Mendelssoh: Gondola Veneciana, Op 19, #6
Canzoneta Del Cuarteto, op. 12
Schumann: Berceuse (tune 6th string to D)
Saint - Nicolas
Romanza
Chopin: Nocturno Op. 9 #2 (tune 6th string to D)
Preludio #7
Preludio #20
Albeniz: Granada
Cadiz (tune 6th string to D)

I regard this book as a real treasure of arrangements!

I haven't yet made the Spotify playlist. When I make the Spotify playlist, I will post the Spotify playlist in this forum.
