There is more than one way to use a metronome. It depends on, amongst other things, the features of the metronome, the music you are trying to learn, the skills you already have, and the way in which you are approaching the learning.

To talk about a "proper" way to use a metronome is not taking into account those differences.
I don't think it does depend on those things. Have a look at the video I posted.
I did, it is a good beginners introduction to rhythm. If it works for you, fine.

well.. interesting...I never ever used metronome...it make me crazy... I love to play with drummer.. but metronome...click click click click... - and I am going mad.. can not stand clocks with such sound too..

You can set a lot of metronomes to silent with just a flashing light. Of course the problem there is you have to have it in sight all the time

Well Andrei,my crazy Russian amigo, it seems not to have troubled you as I see you are a famous guitarist and composer. I will listen to some of your music later (without a metronome!)

Metronome is a good tool,
Especially at the beginning and when people have trouble with rhythm/meter.
